About Our Opportunity

The Nova Scotia Department of Environment (NSE) is tasked with helping keep Nova Scotians’ safe and healthy by adding support to various provincial points of entry. This work is an important part of Nova Scotia’s response to the COVID-19 Global Pandemic. In this position, you will be responsible for interacting with all travelers who enter the province, confirming basic personal information according to public health protocols. You will be checking with visitors by collecting, tracking, and protecting personal information related to their travel plans, where they have traveled from, and whether they will be required to self-isolate for 14 days. You will also be responsible for sharing information with travelers related to the Nova Scotia Health Protection Act Order and providing guidance on where to get more assistance throughout their trip (i.e. 811 telephone line, novascotia.ca).

Primary Accountabilities

As a Border Liaison Officer, your main responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

Collect, track, and protect the personal information of travelers entering the province. This would include inquiring about travelers’ plans, where they have traveled from, and whether they will be required to self-isolate for 14 days. This will be done in person through verbal communication and by providing travelers with information sheets outlining key Health Protection Act Order measures and restrictions including self-isolation requirements and providing contact information for further inquiries;
Collect self-declaration forms and place them in a secure area.
Maintain a daily tally of outside Atlantic Bubble travelers.
Assist with directing travelers to identified screening areas at provincial points of entry (i.e. land border crossings, ferry terminals, and airports).
Assist with identifying and separating travelers originating from outside the Atlantic. May include separation of vehicles at provincial land border crossings and ferry terminals and/or airline passengers in airports.
Must be prepared to work outside in various weather conditions.

To be considered for the Border Liaison Officer opportunity, you must have experience working in a customer service or client service environment with a demonstrated ability to work under pressure. Attention to detail and accuracy is essential. Experience with face-to-face customer/client service experience, problem-solving/conflict resolution, and proficiency in a second language are considered assets.

In addition, you must demonstrate:
Strong organizational skills;
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
Team player skills, with the ability to work collaboratively within a team environment;
Ability to work independently;
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
Working Conditions

The Amherst Provincial border and Airports operate 24/7 and have scheduled shift work including nights and weekends. Shift start times and durations can vary by assignment and are subject to change. With a few exceptions, there are typically 3-shifts per day (operating 7-days a week), at various points of entry that are 7-8 hours in duration. Specific shift details would be provided at the time of the assignment. Employees should be prepared to work outside in various weather conditions at the Amherst Provincial border and ferry terminal points.

Personal protection equipment will be provided.

While these positions are casual in nature, there may be a requirement to extend past the 10- week time frame

Pay Grade: TE 10 – TE 10 Hourly

Salary Range: $19.16 – $21.64 Hourly
