The executive governor of Zamfara, Bello Matawalle has urged the new Nigerian service chiefs to provide more modern war hardware for the security agencies operating in the state.

Journal Reporters had exclusively reported how Nigerian soldiers deployed to fight insurgents, in a live video, complained that they have not been able to match or overwhelm Boko Haram insurgents because the weaponry used by the terrorists is more sophisticated than those availed to them. 

The soldiers also complained that the weapons they are provided with to fight insurgents are degraded and outdated. 

Speaking on the need to overwhelm bandits, Governor Matawalle explained that improved and modern equipment would nip in the bud the current spate of insecurity confronting Zamfara and the entire country.

According to the Gazette, the governor also enjoined the military to clear every Fulani bandit camps in the state forests, stressing it will go a long way to exposing and eliminating them.

Subsequently, the Chief of Defence Staff (COAS), Gen. Lucky Irabor has urged the troops of Operation Hadarin Daji to be merciless and more aggressive in dealing with bandits, kidnappers and other criminals operating in Zamfara.

Gen. Irabor gave the order when he led the service chiefs and principal staff officers of the Defence Headquarters and Services Headquarters on a one-day operational visit to the troops in the state.

The acting Director of Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, who disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja, said the purpose of the visit was to assess the ongoing military operation in the state and to also commend the combat and operational readiness of troops.

The CDS commended the troops for their efforts and urged them to continue giving their best to ensure the return of lasting peace to Zamfara and the North-West.

He urged them to be ruthless and more aggressive in rooting out unrepentant bandits and other criminals in the North-West comprising Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto, and Kebbi.

COAS also charged the troops to remain focused, committed, and resolute in discharging their duties.

He assured that the service chiefs would support and enhance their fighting capabilities and efficiency, including improved welfare and prompt resolution of administrative challenges bedevilling the operation.
