A volcanic eruption occurred on this page today after a question was asked. The question was:

ON WHICH YEAR WAS IPOB INAUGURATED A POLITICAL MOVEMENT FOR THE RESTORATION OF BIAFRA?

Some gave straight answers like 2012, 2014, 2018. While others reacted angrily that IPOB is not a political movement rather a freedom fighting movement/independence movement.

The confusion here is the differences between a political movement and independence movement/ freedom fighting movement. 

First of all, a political movement is not the same as a political party. IPOB is not a political party surely. So, is it a political movement? 

A political movement is characterized by an organized group that pressures the goverment to pass legislations like referendum or recognize certain rights of people like racial equality premiered by the civil rights movement, or to recognize the rights of the indigenous people.

Unlike any other group they have an ideology which they propagate.

More specifically, the free online dictionary defines political movement as a group of people working to achieve a political goal like independence of a state.

Example is Palestine Liberation Organisation which sought for independence of the state of Palestine.

Political movements include civil rights movements, freedom movements, gay rights movements, independence movement etc.

Independence movement comes under political movement. It is a type of political movement that seeks specifically the independence of one country from another. Example Catalonia, Biafra Independence movements.

IPOB is a political movement (specifically and independence movement) that works to create awareness, pressure the govt to recognize the right of the indigenous people of Biafra to decide their political future through a referendum.
