A Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Gumi has said he will stop granting interview to some sections of Nigeria's Media he described as the "Southern Press". Gumi alleged that the accused news press is feeding it's readers and sympathizers with dangerously misconstrued facts when issues border on northerners.
The Islamic cleric disclosed this a statement entitled, "The Southern Press: Why the hostility?", which he shared to his official Facebook handle on Wednesday.
Gumi, who has been meeting bandits groups in the forests in an attempt to broker peace deal with their leaders in the northern part of Nigeria, said the Nigerian press are no less in crime than the other groups and individuals that are terrorizing the nation.
The statement read, "As it turns out to me, the southern press, not all, but in general, is feeding its readers and sympathizers with dangerously misconstrued facts when issues border on northerners. You just need to speak a word in all honesty and naivety, only to find the same word misreported or maliciously twisted especially in their headings and commentaries. I have experienced this many times over and over again.
"It has become necessary that I should stop granting any interviews to such media houses in the future and also, call on people to shun readership to such irresponsible press that is only working to bring discord among people, profiling groups that leads to ethnic cleansing, and also destabilizing the country for ulterior motives. I can’t explain why the acrimony!
"They are not less in crime than the other groups and individuals that are terrorizing the nation to break or secede or be destroyed. Let us pray, Evil will never prosper.
"May Allah guide us to the straight path, and protect our nation from agents of destabilization. Amin"
