Following the siege on the Capitol building on Wednesday January 6, Democrats are once again pushing for impeachment of President Donald Trump, this time accusing him of inciting an insurrection.
Meanwhile, the liberal media (and some in power) are pushing the narrative that free speech platforms like Parler were used to plan the siege. Of course, if this is true, that means that President Trump’s speech last Wednesday couldn’t have possibly incited anything. No leftist seems to have acknowledged the contradiction in these talking points – but what else is new?
Last week the White House responded to calls for impeachment 2.0, blasting it was politically motivated and an attempt to divide the country with only days left in his presidency.
And now this morning, it begins.
According to the New York Post:
An article of impeachment charging President Trump with “incitement of insurrection” was introduced by House Democrats.
The single impeachment article accuses Trump of making repeated false claims about widespread fraud in the US election, inciting his supporters to interrupt a vote on President-elect Joe Biden’s Electoral College victory in Congress last week, and pressuring Georgia’s secretary of state to overturn Biden’s win in the Peach State.
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland told fellow Democrats he expects a House vote on the measure Wednesday.
The document reads, in part: “Donald John Trump, by such conduct, has demonstrated that he will remain a threat to national security, democracy, and the Constitution if allowed to remain in office, and has acted in a manner grossly incompatible with self-governance and the rule of law. Donald John Trump thus warrants impeachment and trial, removal from office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any office of honor, trust, or profit under the United States,” the document continues with a clause that would block Trump from running in 2024.”
Pelosi also called on the House today to formally lean on VP Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment. A resolution to that effect was introduced by House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, but it needed to be unanimous to take effect, and was blocked by House Republicans.
Pelosi made the real reason for impeachment clear on 60 Minutes on Sunday- she and other Democrats fear President Trump running for president again.
But don’t expect to see this dominate the news cycle- at least not for the next couple of months.
House Majority Whip James Clyburn laid out a timeline for impeachment on Sunday- and said that Democrats may wait until after Biden’s first 100 days in office to send any impeachment articles to the Senate.
The purpose in waiting 100 days is because of how crucial those first 100 days are to an incoming president. Democrats here at least acknowledge that impeachment is a complete waste of time that prevents the government from working on things that matter. It’s a shame they didn’t realize that last time they filed articles for impeachment – during a pandemic.
