Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Oyo, Emmanuel Badejo has urged the Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari and other political leaders to emulate the sacrificial nature of Jesus Christ – who died that others should live.
President Buhari is currently in the UK on a medical vacation while many hospitals in his country rot away.
The Bishop faulted the dilapidated health structures and infrastructures in the country to the non-sacrificial attitudes of the political leaders.
Badejo delivered the message in a statement on Thursday ahead of Good Friday (a day professed Christians commemorate the passion and death of Jesus Christ on the cross), Gazette report.
He said, "According to the holy book, Christ died so that others could live a better life.
“At the point of death, Jesus said, ‘It is finished.’ He paid the supreme price so that violence and bloodshed will stop among us."
“Leaders should make sacrifices and seek the interests of their people because it is a desirable thing for all,” The cleric added
According to him, Jesus is the perfect example that Buhari and other leaders should imitate.
Badejo added that Good Friday calls on leaders to work for a better world like Jesus did while on earth.
“Love is the most powerful tool with which to create a better world, and it demands that we work for justice and fairness to all,” the bishop said.
Speaking on the spate of insecurity in Nigeria, the Catholic Bishop explained that anybody killed unjustly is defeat to humanity
“We must sit down and realise that we are of the same stock, children of one God, and live accordingly. Every life that is snuffed out, every child that is killed, is a defeat of humanity.
“Let us work together for peace, justice and let love return for us all to experience, again, one world and one humanity,” the bishop explained.
He added, “The cross is a powerful weapon against evil if we live by its values. The blood that Jesus shed on calvary will never lose its power.”
